There are some celebrities that quietly and devoutly attend masses, and there are some that do not. Today we are going to look at some of our favorite celebrities that do not believe in God.
1. Morgan Freeman
Despite actually playing God in “Bruce Almighty” and “Evan Almighty”, this esteemed actor is a non-believer. In response to a question about religion, he stated: “My belief system doesn’t support a creator as such; we can call him God, who created us in His/Her/Its image.” He went on to say that he was unsure of whether he was an atheist or agnostic because he believes that we actually created God. He finished his thought by saying “So if I believe in God, and I do, because I think I am God.”
2. Ricky Gervais
It should come as no surprise, especially if you follow this funny man on Twitter, to know that Ricky Gervais is an atheist. When it comes to religions, he has several quotes that perfectly explain his feelings on religion. One such quote is “Everyone has the right to believe anything they want. And everyone else has the right to think that they are <expletive> ridiculous.” Another one is “Imagine if you carried on believing in Santa and the Tooth Fairy into adulthood. And even killed & started wars over it. Haha. Imagine that.”
3. Billy Joel
Billy Joel admits to growing up in a household that had religion. He stated that as a child he attended a Catholic mass as much as he attended a Jewish temple. While he does identify as a “cultural Jew” today, he admits that he is an atheist.
4. Kevin Bacon
Kevin Bacon was raised as a Catholic, though he is an atheist. When asked about his religion, he bluntly stated that “I don’t believe in God”. When it comes to his band, they even have lyrics like “Please don’t hurt the children/please lay down the rod/Please don’t send your bombs in and say you’re doing the work of God.”
5. Emma Thompson
In response to a question about religion, Thompson responded: “I regard religion with fear and suspicion. It’s not enough to say that I don’t believe in God. I actually regard the system as distressing. I’m offended by some of the things stated in the Bible and the Koran, and I refute them.”
6. Julianne Moore
There have been a few different occasions where Juliane Moore discussed religion. One time she was asked what she would say if she met God, to which she responded “I was wrong; you do exist”. She admits that she lost her religion when her mother died.
7. Keira Knightly
Once when talking about religion, Keira Knightly stated: “If only I wasn’t an atheist, I could get away with anything. You’d just ask for forgiveness and then you would be forgiven. It sounds much better than having to live with guilt.” That was her response when discussing infidelities of conservative politicians and how they can just “Hail Mary” their misdeeds away.
8. Penn Jillette
Penn Jillette is very outspoken about his views on religion. In fact, he has even written a book “God, No!: Signs You May Already be an Atheist and Other Magical Tales”. Among his quotes on religion include the following gem: “It’s fair to say that the Bible contains equal amounts of fact, history, and pizza.”
9. Jack Nicholson
Jack Nicholson grew up as a Catholic but he stated that his family failed at Catholicism. He often teeters on whether or not he is agnostic or an atheist, but one thing that he has not teetered on is his lack of religion.
10. Jodie Foster
Jodie Foster is an atheist and admits to this. However, just because she does not personally believe, does not mean that her children are raised without religion. In fact, she believes it is important to expose them to all religions to let them make their own choice as they get older.
